When alt-rock feels like it’s lost in loops of nostalgia, Beauty School Dropout shows up loud, reckless, and alive, a Californian band that refuses to settle. Formed in 2020, the group is made of Colie Hutzler on vocals, Brent “Beepus” Burdett on bass, Bardo Novotny on guitar, and Colton Flurry on drums.
What started as Colie’s solo project back when he was in another band quickly evolved into a full-blown group. After the dissolution of his previous group, he brought in Brent and Bardo, and soon the four locked into the chemistry that would define BSD’s sound.
From the early days, BSD caught the attention of people all over the rock world. Beauty School Dropout blends everything: alt-rock grit, pop-punk hooks, touches of hip-hop energy, and indie-rock sensibility. Their songs are messy in the best way, built on raw guitar riffs, pounding drums, emotionally charged vocals, and choruses that land like a gut punch.
Lyrically, they are the definition of chaos. Their music is driven by emotional honesty, longing, and disillusionment, the kind of teenage and adult malaise that feels uncomfortably real. Their sound evolves alongside them, with each album and single carrying the weight of a band that has lived through both the grind and the chaos, always with sincerity and no filters.
Their first official EP, Boys Do Cry, was released in 2021 shortly after the lineup solidified. In 2022, they followed with their debut album We Made Plans & God Laughed, with the track “Almost Famous” featured a collaboration with Mark Hoppus. In 2023, the band released READY TO EAT, a more mature body of work that showed growth without losing their raw identity. Then in 2025, with WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO?, Beauty School Dropout made a clear statement that punk and rock are very much alive, sharper, louder, and more authentic than ever.
BSD is not about cheap revival or forced nostalgia. They take the ruins of rock and punk, anxiety, doubt, rebellion, and transform them into charged melodies, vivid choruses, explosive live energy, and lyrics that crack the chest open.
