Language is a system of reflection of objects and phenomena that exist around us; it is a system of signs that fixes information and subsequently processes and transfers it to another subject. The "55" magazine is dedicated to the infinite amount of various combinations of those systems and tries to build its own particular system, own language, within the the one specific theme of each issue.

The Sign

The sign '55' comprises a precise rhythm and a certain portion of subcultural-sacral symbolism. By switching around the numbers (or words) of the name of the magazine one will obtain absolutely the same thing, which makes the name dualistic in its nature. Each issue of the 55 magazine is an experiment within a one certain theme. To involve through cooperation authors belonging to various subcultural spaces and to unite them in one common theme, we invented a name that possesses the minimal value, acts as original access code, consists only of figures, but at the same time opens this very access to another semantic space, the space of the "55" magazine.

The 55 magazine is a magazine about contemporary subcultures which indirectly affect mass culture: in their own ways they decompose it and recreate it anew. Actually, a subculture is the culture of group of people united by their specific interests that define their world vision. They include musical currents, sociopolitical and art associations and even scientific communities; countercultures and the underground are among them as well.

The Subject

The publication is destined for a young intellectual audience that is in the process of the permanent intuitive search, the so-called intellectual snobs. The target audience also includes professionally determined people who have not yet or are not willing to get a precise ideological or public position. And also the representatives of subcultures, including the authors of the 55 magazine.

Publication

The magazine is quarterly. The date of each issue may depend on its theme. The magazine will be issued in PDF electronic format; all the texts and most of the illustrations can be found on our site. We are always glad to meet new authors, illustrators, and photographers.
